Accessibility Statement

I want this website to be usable by as many people as possible, including visitors who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, screen magnification, or who prefer reduced motion. This page explains what I have done, how I tested it, and how you can let me know if something does not work for you.

Conformance target

I aim for this website to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. WCAG explains how to make web content more accessible for people with a wide range of disabilities.

What I have done

  • Semantic HTML with a logical heading structure and landmark regions on every page.
  • A "skip to main content" link at the top of each page for keyboard users.
  • Descriptive alt text on images, and titles on all embedded videos.
  • Descriptive names for repeated links (for example "Read more" links say which article they lead to).
  • Colour combinations checked to meet the AA contrast ratio for text.
  • Visible keyboard focus outlines on links and buttons, and keyboard access to scrollable code blocks and diagrams.
  • Respect for the operating-system "reduce motion" setting, which calms animations and the auto-advancing slideshows.
  • Correct language attributes, including on the German-language fiction pages.
  • No cookies, no tracking, and no analytics (see the Privacy Policy).

How I tested

I test the site with the axe-core automated accessibility engine (the engine behind many popular checkers) across the site's pages, alongside manual keyboard testing. Automated tools cannot catch everything, so this is an ongoing effort rather than a one-time certification.

Known limitations

A small number of pages are stand-alone experiments, interactive games, and visual art pieces with their own bespoke designs. These may not fully meet Level AA, and equivalent information is generally available elsewhere on the site. I improve them as I am able.
